Q.
Why is the listed eCOI (DNA) for a pairing different than the eCOI from Embark's Pair Predictor?

We calculate the eCOI using two open source toolsets, PLINK & KING, that can analyse SNP data. Embark probably uses different toolsets, or may have developed their own, to calculate the eCOI. While it is likely that in both cases gene identity by descent (IBD) is what is (primarily) used to determine the eCOI, certain parameters might differ resulting in slightly different numbers.

We have compared many of our own calculations with the eCOI numbers calculated by Embark and have found our results to be within a 1% difference at most.

Q.
How are matches calculated?

Matches are calculated based on three areas of consideration: inbreeding, health & coat.

When looking at inbreeding, we evaluate the expected COI, the recent inbreeding (5 generation pedigree COI), as well as the total inbreeding (genetic COI).

Genetic COI is more accurate than pedigree-based COI. This is simply because recorded pedigrees are usually limited by the number of known generations (i.e., having unknown ancestors), and then complicated by errors in the record (e.g., wrong parentage). Furthermore, while each ancestor contributes equally (50%) to their immediate progeny, the specific genes that are passed on from each parent are random. This is why it is possible for pups from the same litter to have different COI. Pedigree based COI cannot account for this random distribution.

The most immediate (5-generation) known pedigree is given weighted consideration over more distant generations. This is because recent inbreeding is expected to have a greater impact -potentially being more harmful- than ancestral inbreeding, due to its proportionally greater influence on the current generation.

When looking at health, we evaluate both parents' HD (Hip Dysplasia) and DM (Degenerative Myelopathy) results, as well as the statistical epilepsy risk for the pairing. Other results such as ED (Elbow Dysplasia) are not taken into account, because a dog with bad elbows will not be approved as a breeding dog (and thus not included in the Matchmaker). Eyes are also not taken into account because there are numerous different eye conditions, and each registry has their own guidelines on what is acceptable.

For coat traits, we evaluate the various color loci that are relevant to the Tamaskan, as well as the coat length. We also consider any possibility of having blue eyes.

Q.
What do the icons mean that are shown under match details?

A green checkmark Check indicates a positive or favorable evaluation.
Inbreeding: The total (genetic) eCOI is under 6.25%, and the recent (5 generation pedigree) eCOI is under 3.13%.
Health: At least one parent has a clear DM result, at least one parent has a normal HD score (FCI A or equivalent), and the statistical epilepsy risk of the pairing is below the mean figure for healthy Tamaskan Dogs.
Coat: All possible phenotypes fall within the breed standard.

An orange dash Minus indicates a neutral status or evaluation. The result is neither positive nor negative.
Inbreeding: The total (genetic) eCOI is between 6.25% and 12.50%, or the recent (5 generation pedigree) eCOI is between 3.13% and 6.25%.
Health: At least one parent has a clear DM result, but both parents have borderline HD scores (FCI B or equivalent), and/or the statistical epilepsy risk for the pairing is at or above the mean figure for healthy Tamaskan Dogs.
Coat: Some of the possible phenotypes may not fit the breed standard.

A red "x" XMark indicates a negative, cautioned, or detrimental evaluation.
Inbreeding: The total (genetic) eCOI is above 12.50%, or the recent (5 generation pedigree) eCOI is above 6.25%.
Health: Both parents are DM carriers, and/or the statistical epilepsy risk is at or above the mean figure for epileptic Tamaskan Dogs.

A grey question mark QuestionMark indicates an unknown evaluation. This is shown when certain data is missing for one or both parents, such as the raw Embark data to calculate the total (genetic) eCOI, specific health test results (HD, DM), and/or coat traits.

A grey spinner Spinner indicates a pending evaluation.
